Interventions

We have recently developed a program of research to study the effects of different types of training on brain development and cognition. The overarching goal of this research is to examine whether brain systems that are modifiable in special populations can be changed through targeted interventions. We have studied interventions for typically-developing children, as well as children with language or reading impairments. In current research, we are working with Head Start of Lane County to deliver small-group interventions in attention or language skills. Children are randomly assigned to an intervention or one of two control groups: a regular classroom control group or a nonspecific pullout group that controls for the adult attention and other general effects of the targeted interventions. Another intervention study examines the effects of parent training programs on children's cognitive and brain development. This research is funded by the NIH/NIDCD (2007-2012) and the U.S. Dept. of Education (2007-2011).
